*Editor’s Note: Giant-centric societies are led by a sole ruler, known as the 'Tallest One', which has historically been interpreted as meaning, literally, 'the largest entity in the region'. Different Giant ethnicities have always interpreted this custom differently, but recent events have severely exacerbated these differences, leading to mounting tensions between political factions within their territories. - M.G.

**Editor’s Note: This edition of ‘A Stranger’s Guide to Destrea’ has been amended to reflect the current political schism taking place in Gilgan circles across the realm. As such, since each faction within the Nation of Gilgas has claimed a different city as its capital, we have not indicated any of the preceding municipalities as the ‘true’ capital of Gilgas. - M.G.

Gilgan Slang, Sayings, and Idioms

"How one is done, all is done" - Be consistent in everything you do.

"Damping one's moss" - Drinking, in the context of numbing emotional pain.

"Bouldering" (adj.) - Being abrasive, uncouth, or lacking sensibility.

Former Gilgan capital, Whiterock, deep in the heart of The Smoothstone Range.
The Spire at Heightsmaw, the purported tallest edifice in Destrea, here depicted at the stated peak of its height (2.3 miles tall), roughly two centuries ago.
Editor's note: out of respect for Gilgan customs, this will be the only illustration of The Spire found in this edition of The Stranger's Guide to Destrea.

The Spire at Heightsmaw

Considered one of the greatest architectural accomplishments in Destrea's history, The Spire at Heightsmaw has stood, in one form or another, from as long ago as 150 FE, to the dawn of mortal memory itself. Culturally, it is forbidden to depict the Spire in any way that is not exactly to scale with its current height. We are, however, able to relay that The Spire currently stands roughly 1.5 miles tall, with several quake-resistant supports which are nearing completion at its base. Over time, it has been partially destroyed countless times, but each iteration is more resilient, if not quite as high-reaching, as the last.

While the section of the Spire extending beyond the 'cloud line' is reserved for Monks of the Stone Fist, the preceding ninety-nine storeys are accessible to the public. The first sixty are dedicated to housing the Legion of Ukrer, which is composed of some 7,200 carved Limestone warriors.

Gilgan Political Factions

The Stone Dragons

Mainly comprised of current and former legionaries, The Stone Dragons have proclaimed the Elder Dragon, Vorac'nath'al, is Tallest One, in light of both her physical size and centuries-spanning displays of power. The movement's leaders have gathered at Heightsmaw, in the low hills of southeast Gilgas, which is closest to the country's border with Voran.

Sons of the Trueborn

The Sons of the Trueborn have gathered in Whiterock and proclaimed that ROGO, despite being indisposed since the Battle of Summoner's Plain, remains Tallest One. Their contingent is the largest of the three factions, but is also the least organized.

Whiterock Loyalists

The Whiterock Loyalists, despite their best efforts, were unable to secure the historical capital before their ROGO-backing rivals. Having been forced to instead gather at Bulkspire, the westernmost city in Gilgas, they have proclaimed that their nation, as a whole, is Tallest One. Their cause is, in effect, an effort to formally democratize Gilgas.

Relations in the Realm

Voran

Once considered stalwart allies of the Voran Empire, Gilgans have grown increasingly disillusioned with their draconic cohort. Their enthusiasm in the campaigns since Vorac'nath'al's First Conquest has waned significantly. This may be due to ideological drift amongst their population, or perhaps it's due to a sort-of general fatigue with warfare, or something else entirely.

The Stön Trillium

Gilgans, by and large, share a broad disdain for the Stön Trillium's exploitative way of life, environmentally, financially, and in their view, spiritually, which causes them to question their Voran allies' tolerance of them. Historically, in Gilgan culture, each of these modes of assessment is broadly considered intractable from the others. "How one is done, all is done," as they say. Generally speaking, they bristle at compromise, and absolutely detest lies, which makes them naturally disinclined toward the free-wheeling mercantilism broadly embraced by the Stön Trillium.

The Commonwealth

Their interpretation of strength is often mischaracterized as simplistic, but contrary to popular belief, most Gilgans actually respect strength as it relates to one's status & size. This likely explains Gilgas' refusal to wage a proxy war against the fledgling Free Destrean Commonwealth on Voran's behalf during Aegis' Wake, as such actions would be unworthy of a ‘being’ their ‘size’. Again, the Gilgans’ collectivist mindset can in this case characterize a nation of people as one entity, making the Commonwealth relatively small, due to its low population and comparative lack of military strength.
